Straight answers for restaurants, riders, customers, and investors β covering how it works, what it costs, when it launches, and why Bolt Food failing doesn't mean VAYA will.
π½οΈ For restaurants
How does the restaurant subscription work exactly?
Restaurants pay a flat monthly fee based on their order volume tier β R300/month Starter, R500/month Growing, or R800/month Active in South Africa (Β£60/month flat in the UK). That is the only payment. No commission on any order, ever. You keep 100% of every order value. The fee is billed monthly and there is no contract β cancel any time.
How do orders come through to the restaurant?
Orders appear on a dedicated restaurant tablet running the VAYA restaurant app β a simple, clean interface that shows incoming orders, estimated pickup time, and rider details. The app is available on Android and iOS and works on any tablet. Most restaurants use a standard 10-inch Android tablet. VAYA provides setup support and the app is free to download. Sound and visual alerts notify staff of new orders instantly.
Is there a contract? What if I want to leave?
No contract. No lock-in. Cancel any time with no penalty. We are confident enough in the model to let you try it without any commitment. The first two months are completely free β no payment required until month three.
"With commission I pay nothing in a slow month. With a flat fee I'm stuck paying regardless."
This is the most common concern β and it's fair. Two answers. First: your first two months are completely free, so the risk doesn't exist at the start. By month three you'll know exactly what VAYA is generating. Second: VAYA operates a R2/order safety net. If your orders in any month don't reach the flat fee threshold (roughly R2,500 in order value for the Starter tier), you pay just R2 per order (SA) or Β£0.75 per order (UK) instead of the flat fee. In SA, 80 orders in a slow month costs R160 β not R300. In the UK, 80 orders costs Β£60 β same as the flat fee, so the protection kicks in below that. The flat fee only applies once orders are flowing. If you're not busy, you barely pay. If you are busy, the flat fee saves you thousands versus commission. Either way, VAYA works in your favour.
What happens to my existing delivery apps?
You can run VAYA alongside your existing platforms β there is no exclusivity requirement. Many restaurants start by adding VAYA as an additional channel, then shift more volume to VAYA as they see the cost difference. You are never forced to drop another platform to join VAYA.
Can I set my own prices on VAYA?
Yes β completely. Because VAYA charges you a flat subscription rather than commission, you have no per-order cost to recover. You can charge the same prices you charge in the restaurant itself, rather than inflating delivery prices to cover commission. That is one of the key benefits for your customers too.
π΅ For riders
When do I start paying the subscription?
Not until you have earned with VAYA first. We do not charge a subscription until you have completed deliveries and received earnings through the platform. The subscription (R500/month in SA, Β£30/month in UK) is then deducted in small weekly instalments directly from your earnings β so you are never out of pocket. If in any week your earnings do not cover the instalment, the shortfall simply rolls forward to the following week. You will never be charged from your own bank account for the subscription.
Do I keep 100% of tips?
Yes. Every tip goes entirely to you. VAYA takes no percentage of tips, ever. The only payment to VAYA is the flat monthly subscription, deducted from earnings weekly.
How does the tip notification work?
When a customer leaves you a tip, a notification banner appears at the top of your screen without interrupting your navigation. Swipe left to dismiss silently. Swipe right to instantly send a thank you to the customer β no typing, completely hands-free. Before swiping right, tap the dropdown on the banner to pick from 10 pre-written messages that fit the moment β everything from "Thank you so much! Really appreciated π" to "That tip goes a long way β thank you!" The default sends the first option automatically if you just swipe without selecting. Customers who receive a genuine thank you are significantly more likely to tip again.
What are the actual rates?
South Africa: R10 flag fall + R7/km standard, R8.50/km during peak hours. R25 minimum fare. (Riders demanded R6/km via strike action β VAYA exceeds this at R7/km.) United Kingdom: Β£1.50 flag fall + Β£2.10/mile standard, Β£2.60/mile peak. Β£5.00 minimum fare. These are the rates you receive β 100% of the delivery fee goes to you. No platform cut. No percentage deduction per order.
How do I receive and accept orders?
Through the VAYA rider app, available on Android and iOS. When an order is ready for pickup in your area, you receive a notification showing the restaurant, the pickup address, the delivery address, the estimated distance, and the fare you will earn. You accept or decline β there is no penalty for declining. Accepted orders show you turn-by-turn navigation to the restaurant and then to the customer.
Is there surge pricing on VAYA?
No. Never. VAYA charges a fixed rate at all times. The standard rate applies on a Friday night, in the rain, during a major event β always the same. You know exactly what you will earn before you accept any order.
What vehicle types are accepted?
Motorcycle, scooter, bicycle, and car β depending on the delivery zone and order type. The VAYA rider app supports all vehicle types. Food deliveries are typically handled by motorcycle, scooter, or bicycle. Parcel deliveries (VAYA Swift, launching after the food pilot) include car options for larger items.
π For customers
Do I pay a subscription as a customer?
No. Customers never pay a subscription. You only pay the delivery fee β nothing else. No booking fee, no service charge, no hidden extras. The delivery fee goes entirely to the rider. VAYA's revenue comes from the restaurant and rider subscriptions, not from customers.
Why are prices on VAYA different from other apps?
They may be lower β or the same. Because restaurants on VAYA do not pay 25β30% commission per order, they do not need to inflate their delivery menu prices to cover that cost. Many restaurants charge the same prices on VAYA as they charge in the restaurant itself. On other platforms, that same restaurant may charge more to recover the commission cost.
Is there surge pricing?
No. VAYA has two fixed rates β standard and peak. Both are published in advance. No unpredictable multipliers, no surprise fees on busy nights, no 2Γ or 3Γ charges during rain or events. The peak rate applies during busy periods and is clearly communicated β not silently applied.
πΌ For investors
Didn't Bolt Food fail in South Africa?
Yes β backed by billions, with existing driver infrastructure, and still pulled out entirely. Because they tried to beat Uber Eats at Uber's own game: same commission model, just slightly cheaper. A discount war is not a different model. VAYA does not compete on commission rate β VAYA removes commission entirely. That is a structurally different business on a different battlefield. Different model. Different outcome.
How does VAYA make money if it doesn't charge commission?
Flat monthly subscriptions from restaurants and riders. In South Africa: restaurants pay R300βR800/month depending on volume tier. Riders pay R500/month, deducted from earnings. In the UK: restaurants pay Β£60/month flat, riders pay Β£30/month. The model is profitable at 40 restaurants and 30 riders β a low breakeven threshold achievable within the first four months of the Cape Town pilot.
What is the SEIS raise and how does it work?
VAYA is raising Β£40,000 under the UK Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). Investors receive equity in Go Platform Ltd t/a VAYA at a pre-money valuation of Β£2,500,000, with a minimum investment of Β£10,000. SEIS provides significant tax relief to qualifying UK investors β up to 50% income tax relief and Capital Gains Tax exemption on qualifying gains. The full investor brief is available on request β use the Get in touch tab and select Investor.
When does VAYA launch?
The Cape Town pilot launches in Observatory and surrounding suburbs in 2026, subject to completing the app build and initial restaurant and rider onboarding. Birmingham, UK follows in 2027 once the Cape Town model is validated. Sign up for launch notifications using the button on the main page.
